Why functional blood chemistry
A clearer view of wellness, between the lines of standard labs.
Adults with Down syndrome have unique health patterns that benefit from proactive, ongoing biomarker monitoring. Thyroid function, nutrient status, metabolic and cardiovascular markers, and inflammation can shift quietly over time. Functional ranges read these markers in context, flagging wellness opportunities long before a standard reference range would.
The goal is preventive education and self-advocacy: a clearer baseline, earlier signals, and personalized recommendations you can bring into every wellness conversation.
What our panels work up
Seven categories of wellness, in one draw.
Each panel is organized around the body systems most relevant to the T21 community. Here is what each category reveals.
Cardiovascular
Lipids and lipid ratios that inform long-term heart wellness, an especially important focus across the lifespan.
Metabolic
Glucose, A1c, and insulin reveal how your body manages energy, weight, and blood sugar regulation.
Kidneys
Filtration, hydration, and electrolyte balance markers that reflect kidney function and fluid health.
Liver
Enzymes and proteins that show how your liver is processing nutrients, hormones, and everyday metabolic load.
Nutrients
Vitamin D, B12, folate, and iron status, foundational inputs for energy, immunity, and focus.
Hormone (Thyroid)
Thyroid markers help track the metabolic engine that influences energy, mood, weight, and cognition.
Blood (CBC)
Red and white blood cell counts and indices that reflect oxygen delivery, immune readiness, and overall vitality.

Self-pay vs. insurance
Why self-pay labs are often the better value.
Many of the biomarkers included in our Essential and Comprehensive panels (thyroid markers and antibodies, vitamin D, B12, folate, iron studies, Apolipoprotein B, hsCRP, homocysteine, insulin, and more) are inconsistently covered by insurance.
Through insurance
- Key biomarkers often denied as "not medically necessary"
- Potentially higher out-of-pocket costs (deductibles and coinsurance)
- Referral and billable visit typically required
- Final cost is rarely known upfront
With Down For Greens
- One transparent, predictable price
- Direct access, no referral needed
- The full panel of biomarkers we believe matter most
- Retest on your own schedule to track progress
- AI analysis reviewed by a functional medicine expert
For adults in the Down syndrome community, self-pay panels make functional, preventive biomarker data accessible, affordable, and actionable.
Before your blood draw
A smoother lab experience starts with prep.
For many adults with Down syndrome, the hardest part of a blood draw is not the labs themselves, it is the experience. Anxiety, sensory sensitivities, communication differences, dehydration, and prior negative experiences can all make phlebotomy more difficult. A few simple strategies can change how it feels.
Consider postponing if there is:
- Active vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or dehydration
- Severe dizziness or recent fainting episodes
- Significant illness or weakness
- Extremely poor fluid intake
- A history of severe reactions during blood draws
Tips to make a fasted draw easier
Hydrate well
Water is permitted and recommended during fasting. Good hydration makes veins easier to find, shortens the procedure, and reduces dizziness afterward. Aim for plenty of water the day before your appointment and the morning of your draw.
Schedule earlier in the morning
Shorter fasting window, better energy, and less time for stress to build throughout the day.
Use simple, predictable communication
Short, clear steps work best: "First they clean your arm. Then one quick poke. Then we are all done." Skip overwhelming detail.
Bring comfort items
- Headphones or music
- Sunglasses or a hat for light sensitivity
- Fidget items
- A favorite post-lab snack
- A weighted lap pad
- A preferred support person
Do not watch the needle
Looking away reduces stress and vasovagal reactions. Conversation, music, videos, or breathing exercises can redirect attention.
Ask to lie down if there is a fainting history
If past draws caused fainting, paleness, vomiting, or extreme anxiety, request a reclined position to prevent injury and improve comfort.
After the blood draw
- Hydrate
- Eat a protein-rich meal or snack
- Avoid intense activity immediately afterward
- Monitor for prolonged dizziness or excessive bruising
Most people recover within minutes.
